Review: A Lesson Before Dying

A Lesson Before Dying A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How do you instill dignity and self worth in a person whose environment equates his value with that of a hog? This is the challenge of rural teacher Mr. Wiggins. During the Jim Crow 1940's era his dilemma: leave with his education for a better life or struggle with the unfortunate souls of his community to give them hope for their future. Jefferson's destiny challenges Mr. Wiggins to find his purpose and destiny. A great book that questions the purpose of one's life and ability to endure in a hostile world.
