Review: Becoming

Becoming Becoming by Michelle Obama
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A love story and the experience of the ultimate " We Shall Overcome"journey. The book skillfully gives the reader an emotional and enlightening view of what a person of color from humble means saw and felt during the climb of the American dream in the world of politics. It delves deeply into the personal life of the First Lady from childhood onward. She does not shy away from commenting on the issues of marriage, family, racism, sexism, and class. Her education in the areas of law (Harvard) and sociology/African American Studies (Princeton) makes this book a unique reflection on American culture and the idea that all persons have value. The intimate details of her education experiences, professional career, and marital life are touchstones of truth regarding the lives of women (and women of color). It will spawn many conversations regarding the many hurdles women have to still overcome. The book gives excellent critiques on cultural institutions and the need for a diversity of voices to be heard as America enters the 21st century. A worthy read.
