My rating: 5 of 5 stars
An emotional remembrance of a childhood scared by poverty, racism, and domestic abuse. With luck, faith, and a few good adults he uses his long distance running and comedic talent to make it to college. After a short service in the Army, he begins the long struggle of the starving artist and is supported by a community of friends and a heroic sacrificing wife. After a long winter of debt, he finally has his career break and with the right support and advisers becomes a national figure. Remembering his roots, he uses his celebrity status to engage the dangers of protest against racism in the Deep South. The story of his early life in which he rises from a Nigger to a Man. An excellent book.
