My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A treasure. The author uses her unique skills as an anthropologist and writer to create a lively story of the struggles for love and independence for an African American woman during the Jim Crow period of the 2oth century. Her use of southern dialect for her characters enriches the story and gives the reader an emotional bond with the characters. The creation of complex characters with the traits of a saint and sinner rises the story above the use of stereotypical personalities to express the full range of thought and emotion of the African American experience. An early feminist (womanist) masterpiece.
