Review: Go Tell It on the Mountain

Go Tell It on the Mountain Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For he who is without sin. Baldwin's characters reflect the imperfection of humans and the cruelty of life's circumstances. The sanctified Christians have deep flaws that lead them into a life of either unhappiness or a false perception of the true self. Set in New York City after World War I, the book also captures the challenges of forming a new life during the Great Migration to the North. The north is far from perfect and religious faith cannot salve the pain of poverty and racism. However, the characters endure their sufferings in the hope of salvation after death.

This is a book that delves deeply in the psychopathology of the characters who are trying to find happiness in a cruel world. Excellent writing and character development engages the reader to follow the trials of the characters.
