Review: The Assault on Reason

The Assault on Reason The Assault on Reason by Al Gore
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A civics lesson and critique of political power when there is control over information. The main theme of the book is that a democracy cannot function without an informed citizenry. Deep thought and the exchange of ideas depend upon a communication medium that allows for the development and communication of ideas beyond emotional sound/video clips (dog whistle politics of radio and television advertising). The book also is a critique on the use of power during the G.W. Bush administration and reflects on the overreach of executive power and limited debate. Lastly, it discusses the potential of the internet to restore the political dialogue that is needed among citizens to reason and critique political actions. A good book to understand the weaknesses of a democracy when information and communication among citizens are limited.
